We will meet at St. Agnes where we will begin our candlelit procession, singing through the neighborhood of our St. Agnes Historic Chapel on Church St., accompanied by a donkey, children dressed as an angel, Mary and Joseph. We will stop at several houses asking for shelter, in which we will be denied entry just as Mary and Joseph were denied shelter. We will then walk back to St. Agnes, where we will be led by Bishop Evelio in prayer (one decade of the Rosary). Bishop Evelio will also share his story of the struggles he faced getting into this country as an immigrant from El Salvador. The Bishop and Father Andy will then bless the food and we will celebrate in fellowship with traditional Hispanic food and beverages. There will also be candy for the children.

This event is open to everyone.  All are welcome.  Although it is not required, in the spirit of community and fellowship, please consider bringing a side dish or dessert to share.  Also, please bring your rosary for the event if you have one.  We will have extra rosaries if you need one.  Thank you.

Nos reuniremos en la iglesia St. Agnes donde comenzará una procesión cantada hacia la calle histórica de Church St. acompañados por un burro y niños vestidos como Maria y José. Regresaremos a la iglesia donde El Obispo Evelio Menjivar-Ayala nos guiará en un misterio del Santo Rosario, el mismo compartirá su experiencia de migración a los Estados Unidos desde El Salvador. El Obispo y el Padre Andy bendecirá la comida y compartiremos juntos comida y bebidas típicas. Habrá dulces para los niños.

Este evento está abierto a todos.  Todos son bienvenidos.  Aunque no es necesario, por el espíritu de comunidad y compañerismo, considere traer una plato acompañante o un postre para compartir.  Además, traiga su rosario para el evento si tiene uno.  Tendremos rosarios adicionales si los necesita.  Gracias.

WHAT IS LAS POSADAS?

The word posada means shelter or lodging.

Las Posadas is a traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday celebration, of religious origin. This celebration takes place for nine consecutive evenings (la novena), between December 16 and 24. Participants re-enact the journey undertaken by Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

HOW DO WE CELEBRATE?

Children and families join together in a procession to fill the streets with song and holiday cheer. Typically, a child dressed as an angel leads the procession consisting of other children dressed as Mary and Joseph followed by family and friends. They carry lit candles through the streets of the town or neighborhood singing traditional Christmas songs. The carolers stop at different houses and ask for permission to enter, but permission is always denied except at one house. The house that ends up hosting the evening festivities will gather everyone in prayer (the rosary) and fellowship with traditional dishes and beverages.
