VLCFF Faith Formation and Catechetical Certification Opportunities

Two five-week courses are being offered through the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF). These courses are hybrid models. They are composed of both weekly live two-hour zoom lectures as well as a rich variety of online course materials and discussion experiences through the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community For Faith Formation (VLCFF). The courses are being underwritten by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston’s Office of Evangelization & Catechesis, who pays 100% of the tuition and the cost of any books associated with the courses.

Catechetical Certification courses are designed for volunteer catechists, Catholic school religion teachers, members of OCIA teams and all those who would be enriched by formal training in this field. There are 6 required courses for level one certification including the class below. Both classes are open to adults interested in deepening their faith and growing in their understanding of the theology and Tradition of the Church.

Survey of Catholic Doctrine

Begins October 21, 2024
(5-week session – class meets on Wednesdays at 7pm)

This course is part of level one certification for catechesis. We will come to a better understanding of some of the major doctrines of the Catholic Church, including: the Trinity, original sin, church, salvation history and the communion of saints. By the completion of the course, participants will be familiar with concepts such as the magisterium, ecumenism and eschatology.

This course will include online materials and a two-hour weekly zoom meeting on Wednesday evenings 7-9 pm beginning October 23.

History of Catholic Social Action
Begins October 21, 2024
(5-week session – class meets on Mondays at 7pm)

This course examines the Catholic Social Tradition from the perspective of the rich tradition of Catholic social action. Over five weeks beginning Oct 21st we will look at the activism and spirituality of lay Catholic Social Action, the work of Black Catholics, the role of Catholic social activism in immigration, review the oral and pastoral vision of consistent ethic of life and clarify the difference between works of charity and works of justice. This course assumes participants have a grounding in the basics of the Catholic faith and is considered an advanced course.

The course materials are online and there is a two-hour weekly class discussion on Monday evenings from 7-9 pm beginning October 21.
